Big Tobacco in the Big Apple

How New York City Became the Heart of the Tobacco Industry
…and Anti Smoking Activism

Joe Cherner and Smoke-Free Educational Services

BTBA NYC

Joe Cherner was a relentless anti-smoking advocate in New York City for over 20 years. Through a combination of sharp-edged legislative lobbying, self-financed advertising campaigns, street protests, school presentations and poster contests, Joe Cherner led the fight for clean indoor air and restrictions on cigarette advertising and promotion. This gallery features over 50 clips of Cherner’s anti-smoking activism.
