Smokefree Educational Services

Allied with Doctors Ought to Care, Smokefree Educational Services, founded by New York City investment broker Joe Cherner in 1987, led the movement for a ban on smoking in restaurants and other public places; sponsored anti-smoking poster contests throughout the City school system and bought advertising space for the winning entries in subway stations and on taxi cabs and buses; and organized protests of the Virginia Slims Championships at Madison Square Garden for several years.
