Since 1999, Dr. Alan Blum has served as the Gerald Leon Wallace, MD, Endowed Chair of Family Medicine at the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program. He is also the founder and director of the University of Alabama Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society. In 1977, as a family medicine resident at the University of Miami, he founded Doctors Ought to Care or DOC, the first national physicians’ organization dedicated to countering the promotion of cigarettes and other unhealthy products. DOC chapters were started at more than 80 medical schools and family medicine residencies. Dr. Blum has given over 2000 invited presentations in all 50 states. In 1990 he received the American Medical Association’s First Award for Distinguished Service on Behalf of America’s Youth, and in 1993 he received the American Academy of Family Physicians’ First National Public Health Award. He also received the Surgeon General’s Medallion from Dr. C. Everett Koop, who wrote, “Dr. Blum has done more against smoking than anyone.”
