Cartoonists Take Up Smoking Logo Square

Tribute to Herb Block

A generous donation from the Herb Block foundation made it possible for the original Cartoonist Take Up Smoking exhibition to be featured at the National Museum of Health and Medicine at the Walter Reed  Army Medical Center in Washington DC. Here we honor Herb Block for the cartoons that are featured in the exhibition and highlight a few others that lampooned smoking, the tobacco industry, and their lobbyists and political supporters.

Best known for his scathing caricatures of presidents and over a half century poignant political cartooning , Herb Block also took aim at tobacco and smoking particularly in the wake of the 1964 Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health. As a reformed smoker, Block pilloried the industry and their political allies for their deceit.
